BREAKING NEWS: Edo State First Female Police Commissioner Warns Officers Against Extortion. | Factsheet News.

In a significant move to uphold professionalism within the Edo State Police Command, the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Betty Enekpen-Otimeyin, has issued a stern warning to officers against engaging in extortion and the unauthorized searching of citizens’ mobile phones.

Addressing the issue of phone searches, CP Enekpen-Otimeyin emphasized that while the Inspector General of Police has directed officers to refrain from indiscriminate phone checks, there may be circumstances during investigations where examining a phone becomes necessary. She stated, “The IGP has said we do not need to check phones, but when there are issues that relate to checking information, we cannot stop that.”

CP Enekpen-Otimeyin, who commenced her policing career in Bauchi State in 1992 and has served in various capacities across Nigeria, is the first female Commissioner of Police in Edo State. She has pledged to focus on reducing crime rates and addressing issues related to gender-based violence and child protection. She remarked, “I am here to ensure that the crime level is drastically reduced. I will also address extortion because the IGP has strongly warned against it.” This directive aligns with broader efforts by the Nigerian Police Force to enhance its public image and foster trust within the communities it serves. Citizens are encouraged to report any instances of misconduct by police personnel to the appropriate authorities.
